THE FRISBEE

The Wham-O Manufacturing Company of San Gabriel, California, introduced the plastic Frisbee in 1957 after one of the company's executives had observed Yale students tossing metal pie plates to one another on the campus grounds. The plastic model, which launched a craze that has now become an established sport, was named after the pie tins favored by the Yalies: those manufactured by the Frisbie Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
