and welcome to Entropy Press! Some of you may know everything about Entropy Press already...some of you may have seen random posters or stickers or just stumbled across this web site...and still others have probably partied with us and perhaps due to the bacchanalian revelry still haven't a consciously formulated clue as to what E.P. is about. (however the paradox exists that if you haven't got a consciously formulated clue about entropy and yet you've been tippin' a couple pops with us at our get-togethers, you KNOW -- with the capital "K" -- what entropy is!)
regardless of whether you already know who we are (ha!...and if you know who WE are, then you'll know why that's so funny...) or if you're somebody who just happened to arbitrarily encounter this text...let me take this opportunity to fill you in on what Entropy Press is about in hopes that you'll have new stuff to think about...or be inspired by...
Entropy Press is a self defined forum dedicated to the exploration, propagation and validation of non-linear abstract approaches to thinking and existing. E.P. produces a free bi-monthly magazine (presented in both hard copy and on the World Wide Web), a video magazine, publishes limited series artists' books and promotes gatherings at which performance/ improvisation of all types are encouraged and examined.
The magazine focuses upon the processes of science/ philosophy, art, and music (all of these terms defined in the broadest sense) with specific interest in the "non-linear" approaches or effects inherent to these endeavors. In other words, this magazine is about human perception, either individually or collectively as a society. The magazine upholds the idea that human perception/existence is not a logical or linear experience (A+B does not always equal C). Therefore special attention will be given to aspects concerning the "process" of making the intangible a lived reality. Hence, we will explore issues pertaining to the cognitive sciences, how the brain responds, gathers, and stores stimuli and anomalies of these functions, thus creating our personal reality.
E.P. will also consistently contain articles explaining previously put forth theories regarding our perceptions of reality as a civilization. (i.e.. chaos, quantum mechanics, relativity, post-modernism, sychronicity, existentialism, etc.) We will also expound upon how these theories have brought us to a point in our development where we are better able as a society to consciously understand non-linearity in our experience...or at least recognize it as such. Of course, every issue (which will be called an episode) will contain a "rational" essay more concisely defining the term "non- linear" for the reader; this, juxtaposed with "abstract" writings and art work which will illustrate the concept of non-linearity more satisfactorily than the essay!
It is at this point that I should probably explain how music, of all things, could be included in a magazine pertaining to non-linearity, since music happens in "real-time" and you must (generally) start at point A...the beginning...listen and arrive at point B...the end of the song. Whereas still art (not film or video, but photography, painting and the like) are somewhat easier to define as non-linear, since they as an experience exist outside of time. The object (painting, or whatever it is ) once focused upon instills for the viewer their own sense of time, their own recollections and associations derived from the experience of looking at the art work...obviously this process of cognition is non-linear. However, music/sound on the other hand, is interesting because despite it's linear format, it has the awesome power to by pass logic in the individual or group audience...in easiest terms it causes people to move. The response to music, much like the response to visual art is not linear or logical. In fact music, much more so than still art is able to elicit an exciting and wide range of physical and chemical reactions within the body and thus is completely out of logic's domain.
For instance: Nobody at a live show ever considers, "oh, this note plus those notes equal a minor chord and that's why I feel sad or distressed or like punching the guy next to me in the pit!"...it just doesn't happen...and that is why music, despite its apparent linear nature, is included in this magazine.
Despite the intellectual quagmire the magazine may appear to be dabbling in, E.P. shall
never promote intellectual elitism. Although the magazine as a whole will constantly and
consistently promote the theory of non-linearity, all arguments, articles and interviews shall be
worded in layman's terms and should be understandable to the average high school student, since
our primary audience is between the ages of 17 and 32.... (and they shall NEVER TO BE
REFERRED TO AS GENERATION X!
Entropy Press overwhelmingly welcomes submissions of all kinds pertaining to any of the
aforementioned subject matter in any and all media...interviews, artwork, poetry, criticism (of
artwork/music/lectures or of the magazine's philosophy etc.) are always considered for print!
(for the love of god! if you think that whatever you're working on is at all valid, send it our
way! we're sure to have an episode that your work will pertain to.)
Most importantly, E.P. encourages both the schooled and unschooled to participate in the
creation of culture and knowledge... since both have much to learn and be inspired by in the
other. (In other words: we don't care if you're flunking out of 11th grade algebra or if you've
got your Ph.D., if your ideas and your presentation are good...then they're GOOD! and they
might inspire some one else!)
