Designed by American engineer George Washington Gale Ferris, the first Ferris wheel was installed at the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, in 1893; the huge amusement machine, costing $300,000 had a wheel 250 feet in diameter with thirty-six cars holding forty people each.
