Howard Gardner, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Harvard, has named eight types of intelligence:

  • Linguistic -- the ability to use words
  • Mathematical/logical -- the skill in reasoning and organization
  • Visual/spatial -- abilities in patterning, imagery, and metaphor
  • Musical/auditory -- skill with rhythm and musical patterning
  • Kinesthetic -- physical and athletic skills
  • Inter-personal -- skills in communication and sensitivity to others
  • Intra-personal -- inner focusing skills and being able to work by yourself
  • Intuitive/spiritual -- the skills to operate intuitively and to be aware of the dimensional aspects of consciousness
  • Modern education focuses almost solely on the linguistic and mathematical types of intelligence.
