THE HAL GALPER TRIO WITH JERRY BERGONZI. REBOP. ENJA RECORDS.

on the cover of the CD reads the following definition: "REBOP: n. a form of jazz improvising by musicians of the post be-bop era that embodies the traditions of be-bop but includes the musical advances since that time, i.e. group improvisation, modalism, free, pentatonic, and intervalic improvising, as well as incorporating contempory and historic rythmic concepts..." OK...usually when i see something with a definition hanging off of it i tend to concur with Marcel Proust who said, "A work of art that contains theories is like an object on which the price tag has been left." however, aside from the verbiage which continues to alienate non-musicians and perpetuate the idea that jazz can only be appreciated by some sort of educated/cultural elite, the CD is actually really good! Galper and Bergonzi (both from massachusetts) work off of each other quite well...oh hell, the whole quartet works. the CD which was recorded live at a gig (which in my opinion is the only way jazz should be recorded) in Italy...and you can tell the band is really stoked, absorbing and redistributing the energy the European audience is exuding in the presence of AMERICAN jazz players...i hope i get to catch them live at a place other than at the sterile and completely over priced regatta bar...these guys should really try to avoid pretension...yeah, that might be where the money is...but they have the potential to reach a vastly larger audience.
